In Jeremiah 1:4-5, we find these words: “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.'” This passage highlights the intimate relationship God has with each of us, emphasizing His omniscience – His knowledge of our existence even before conception. Though this truth stretches the limits of what we may believe is possible it assures us that we are not mere accidents of biology. Each life has purpose and meaning, crafted intentionally by God. This divine knowledge should instill in us a sense of comfort; we are seen and valued by God from the very beginning.
This passage also invites reverence, even healthy fear. Knowing that God has an intimate understanding of our lives can be both comforting and daunting. It makes known that our actions, thoughts, and decisions are not hidden from Him. This awareness should lead us to evaluate how we live, motivating us to align our lives with the purpose for which we were created, which is to “worship and enjoy him forever”. (Shorter Catechism) Like Jeremiah, God’s knowledge of us extends to our deepest fears and aspirations, giving us confidence and comfort because He is intimately involved in our lives. Let this fact inspire us to seek a closer relationship with Him, recognizing that we are not merely living for ourselves but for a purpose far greater.
