Her journey ended at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phfc.org\/\">Presbyterian Home for Children (PHFC)<\/a> in Talladega, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>The young woman said she did not want her daughters to grow up fearing men or her sons to have an abusive father as a role model. At Presbyterian Home, the children are growing up in a safe and loving environment and receiving personalized attention in classes at a leadership academy housed at nearby First Presbyterian Church, a partner of PHFC.<\/p>\n<p>The mother, who will graduate from college with a business degree next spring, is now working at Presbyterian Home as a case manager for Secure Dwellings, a program for homeless mothers and children. She is glad to be giving back some of the care and support her family received.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6405 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianfoundation.louderstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/PresHome_021-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>This family is one of many that have found hope and stability at Presbyterian Home for Children, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. \u201cEverything we do here is wrapped in love,\u201d says Doug Marshall, who became President and CEO of PHFC in November 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur leadership team on campus has more than 100 years of combined experience in serving at risk and homeless children,\u201d Marshall says. \u201cI\u2019m excited to be part of a team that is called by God to provide hope and healing for children, young adults, and families made in the image of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acorns falling from the massive oak trees that fill the Home\u2019s 80-acre campus remind him of this mission. \u201cInside every acorn is an oak tree,\u201d he says. Just so with the people served by PHFC, \u201cWe have to look and see their potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Presbyterian Home is a ministry of Alabama\u2019s three presbyteries\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/napcusa.org\/\">\ub178\uc2a4 \uc568\ub77c\ubc30\ub9c8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/presbyteryofsa.org\/\">\uc0ac\uc6b0\uc2a4 \uc568\ub77c\ubc30\ub9c8<\/a>\ubc0f <a href=\"http:\/\/pslpcusa.org\/\">\uc170\ud37c\ub4dc\uc640 \ub7a9\uc2ac\ub9ac<\/a>\u2014and receives substantial support from individuals and congregations.<\/p>\n<p>For several decades, another important partner has been the <a href=\"https:\/\/presbyterianfoundation.louderstaging.com\/ko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\uc7a5\ub85c\uad50 \uc7ac\ub2e8<\/a>. The New Covenant Trust Company, a subsidiary of the Foundation, manages investments for PHFC.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6408 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianfoundation.louderstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/PHFC1-300x127.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"127\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1868 as an orphanage to care for children left without parents after the Civil War, PHFC now offers a variety of services. Felicia Storey, Vice President of Program Operations and Services for PHFC, has seen many changes since she come on staff in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur programs have reached out to meet the needs of children and families over the years,\u201d she explains. Among the programs offered by PHFC:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Secure Dwellings, providing transitional housing for homeless children and their female caregivers<\/li>\n<li>Moderate Residential Care for teenage girls removed from their homes because of extreme abuse or neglect<\/li>\n<li>Transition to Adult Living, providing room, board, and support services to women, ages 19\u201324, as they transition to independent living<\/li>\n<li>Ascension Leadership Academy, education with a Christian foundation for grades K\u201312, featuring small class sizes and personalized instruction<\/li>\n<li>Family Bridges, offering intensive, in-home support aimed at the reunification and preservation of families<\/li>\n<li>Supported Housing that helps break the cycle of homelessness in Alabama<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cAs the needs of children and families have changed, the Home has changed to meet those needs,\u201d Marshall adds. \u201cOne thing that hasn\u2019t changed is our love of children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that includes meeting children where they are. Marshall recalls going to welcome a homeless mother with two sons who came to PHFC in December 2017. \u201cThe youngest son was under the bed,\u201d he says. \u201cI climbed under the bed, and that\u2019s where we met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6407 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianfoundation.louderstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/PresHome_038-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Marshall promised to return and do karaoke with the boy. On his second visit, he says, \u201cwhen I walked over there, he was sitting by the window waiting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For children who have experienced so many broken promises, Marshall says, \u201cthe one thing we must do is promise to love and show up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To continue keeping those promises, \u201cwe need strong financial resources,\u201d he adds. And that\u2019s where the Presbyterian Foundation has been \u201can incredible partner. They are part of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anita Clemons, the Foundation\u2019s Vice President of Investments, manages investments for PHFC with the goal of continuing to grow their endowments. She says the Foundation provides \u201ca customized, not a cookie-cutter approach\u201d to its clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI provide reporting for PHFC on a quarterly basis,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe review how the investments have done, how the markets have done, and any particular needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a bonus, Robert Hay Jr., the Foundation\u2019s Ministry Relations Officer for the southeast region, has worked with PHFC to cultivate planned giving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re fortunate to receive legacy gifts\u2014about one a year,\u201d says Newell Witherspoon, treasurer of the board of trustees and chair of the finance committee for PHFC. When supporters of the Home leave money in their wills, those funds are added to the endowments.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6406 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianfoundation.louderstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/PresHome_023-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clemons is not surprised that gifts to ministries benefiting children\u2014like PHFC\u2014are in the top two categories of donations handled by the Foundation. \u201cWhen you\u2019re investing in children, you\u2019re investing in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marshall sees the Foundation as a valuable partner in the ministry of PHFC. \u201cThey do the complex and detailed work of financial analysis, looking out for our best interest,\u201d he says. \u201cBut ultimately, everything they\u2019re doing is ministry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to donate to the ministry of Presbyterian Home for Children, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phfc.org\/\">www.phfc.org<\/a>, call 256-362-2114, or write Presbyterian Home for Children, 905 Ashland Highway, Talladega, AL 35161.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eva Stimson is a freelance writer and editor and the former editor of Presbyterians Today.
